A New Begining
In the late 1800’s when the Waitotara River was the highway and the byway. Ngaa Paiaka sat on the flatland area of Oringi, below Poronui, where it fell victim to floods.
In the 1940’s our Tupuna decided to move the Marae around to the flat area known as Papatupu. The Marae name was then changed to Waipapa. (signifying new beginnings). In recent years the Waitotara area has again experienced ravaging floods which has badly affected Waipapa Marae.
While Waipapa Marae were grateful recipients of Marae DIY, which played a significant role in the restoration of our Whare Tupuna - Nga Paiaka and the Wharekai -Te Rautau Hou II,restoring the marae to its former glory. However, in 2004 the Marae was yet again devastated by floods. For a few years Marae committees worked in the best interests of whaanau, haapu, and the Iwi planning the relocation of our Pou Whare to a new site.
A build up to the 11th November 2009 saw Nga Paiaka arrive to settle beside Te Rau Tau Hou II, upon the beautiful lookout point of Paopaorangi, with its breathtaking view over the areas of Nga Ariki, Nga Wairiki and Ngati Pourua. This view provokes thought of our significant history infused and interconnected with Ngaa Rauru Kiitahitanga. Our Kuia Nanny Raupo and whanau whaanui welcomed Nga Paiaka to her albeit final resting place.
